A new feature I’m going to be doing here is the Panel of the Week. Last week, while exploring Staples, I picked up a scanner/copier/printer all purpose awesome machine, the HP Deskjet F4280, for a grand total of eighty bucks. I simply couldn’t say no to that price. So, with my new toy I’ll be doing a weekly feature. My favorite panel of the week from last week’s comics.
This week’s panel comes from Wolverine: Roar, the title splash page, drawn by Mike Deodato spreads the center of pages two and three of the book separating the other panels much like Will Eisner’s style. Eisner, with his Spirit comics, used natural surroundings to display title and character. Some great examples of this are provided by Alex Carnevale of io9. Its a technique, I think, very few artists do well and is not done enough. The only one that I can remember doing this was Darwyn Cooke on his Spirit run. Below is the panel.
What I dig about this panel is the title of the annual built into the road. As if the wind of the scene depicted has blown the title, (as well as the writer/artist team) onto the panel as Logan enters the nearly deserted town. This, by far, was my pick of the week for last week because of Deodato being one of my favorite artists working today.
Now for the comics that I bought this week.
- I actually, finally, bought The Alcoholic. Thinking it was supposed to come out last week from my previous post, I finally learned the error of my ways and bought it. Thank God, I’ve been waiting to dig into this book since it was announced in 2006.
- The second book I got, as brought to my attention by Graeme McMillan, was Top Ten: Season Two#1.
